Why is Hyderabad the only option?
Since 2023, all first-time H/L visa interviews for Indian nationals happen exclusively at the Hyderabad consulate. Doesn't matter if you're from Mumbai, Delhi, or Kolkata — first stamp means Hyderabad. Renewals have more flexibility across all 5 Indian consulates.
The $297-340 million consulate complex on Nanakramguda in the Financial District opened in March 2023. It's the largest visa processing facility in South and Southeast Asia — 54 interview windows (up from ~15 in the old Paigah Palace building), capacity for 3,500 applicants daily, and it processed over 1 million visas in FY2023 alone.

Officers here see IT professionals all day. They know the patterns, they know the red flags, and they ask accordingly. Consulting-company employees draw the longest interviews: the officer has to work out who actually controls your day-to-day work, and that takes more questions than a direct hire ever gets asked. No More Dropbox for H1B
As of September 2, 2025, H1B is no longer eligible for interview waiver. Everyone — first-timers and renewals — must attend in-person. Age exceptions (under 14, over 79) also eliminated.
Third-Country Stamping Ended
Since September 6, 2025, Indian citizens can no longer stamp in Canada, Mexico, Dubai, or Singapore. All demand now funnels into 5 Indian consulates: Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata.
Social Media Must Be Public
Since December 15, 2025, officers check X/Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, and LinkedIn during interviews. Private profiles = instant 221(g). Make all profiles public at least 2 weeks before your appointment.
$100,000 Supplemental Fee for New Petitions
Introduced September 21, 2025 for new petitions where the beneficiary sits outside the US. In June 2026 a federal court in Massachusetts struck it down as an unlawful tax, and in July an appeals court refused to revive it — so it isn't being collected right now. A DC court upheld it and that appeal is still live, so this can flip again. Either way it never touched renewals, extensions, transfers, or F-1→H-1B changes inside the US.
What's the real wait time in 2026?
The State Department website put Hyderabad at 5.5 months for H/L on 17 September 2026 — up from about 2.5 earlier in the year, and by some distance the worst of the five Indian posts. Kolkata showed 1 month that day, Chennai and Mumbai 1.5, Delhi 3.
Read that gap carefully, because it is the whole story: the consulate that handles every first-time H-1B stamp in India is also the one with the longest work-visa queue. And even 5.5 months flatters reality — when you actually try to book, slots at all five posts have been vanishing through the end of 2026, with openings landing in spring 2027. The disconnect between the published average and what the booking system shows has been documented by Morgan Lewis, Reddy Neumann Brown, and Seyfarth Shaw.

Why the disconnect? The official number is a historical average; the booking screen is today. Three things hit at once — dropbox died, third-country stamping died, and December's social media rollout forced a mass reschedule — and all of it now lands on five consulates.
"Do Not Travel" Advisories from Major Employers
In December 2025, Apple and Google sent internal advisories to visa-holding employees recommending they not leave the United States for non-essential travel. Major law firms including Reddy Neumann Brown and Morgan Lewis issued similar guidance. Risk: getting stuck abroad for 12-18+ months waiting for a stamping appointment.
"H-1B visa holders who are out of the US on business or vacation will get stranded unless they get in before midnight September 21. H-1Bs still in India may have already missed the deadline as there is no way a direct flight from India will get in time."
What about the Domestic Visa Renewal pilot? The State Department ran a pilot (January-April 2024) processing ~20,000 H1B/L1 renewals inside the US. It's not been renewed and is considered unlikely under the current administration.
How do you book an appointment?
Three steps: fill DS-160, pay the $205 MRV fee, and book two appointments (biometrics + interview). Each step has gotchas that can cost you weeks.
Complete DS-160
Fill the DS-160 form at ceac.state.gov/genniv. Takes ~90 minutes. The session times out after 20 minutes of inactivity — save frequently. You can also run it through our DS-160 Checker to catch inconsistencies before submitting.
Critical for H1B: Enter your 13-digit USCIS petition number from I-797, employer details, and list all social media accounts from the past 5 years. Missing social media = red flag under the new vetting rules.

What happens on interview day?
Plan for 2-4 hours at the consulate for a 3-5 minute interview — 10-30 if you're with a consulting company. Officers here get through up to 3,500 people a day, which is why nothing about the questioning is leisurely.
Arrive 1.5-2 hours early
Store your phone in paid lockers outside the consulate (₹50 for phone, ₹100 for bags). No electronics allowed inside — not even smartwatches.
Security screening (30-45 min)
Two checkpoints. Bag check, metal detector, document verification. Have your passport and appointment letter ready.
Wait inside (30-90 min)
Queue by your token number. Use this time to mentally review your key answers — salary, job title, work location, client details.
Biometrics collection
Fingerprints taken. Quick process, under 5 minutes.
Interview at window (3-30 min)
You stand at a window, not sit. Hand over documents when asked. The officer has your petition, LCA, and DS-160 on screen and is checking your answers against them as you speak. You usually hear the decision right there.
Exit with your slip
Blue slip = approved. Your passport is retained for stamping. Pick up your phone from the locker.

The officer has your petition, LCA, and DS-160 on screen before you say a word. They're verifying that your verbal answers match the documents. Any inconsistency — a different salary number, a wrong city, a job title that doesn't match — triggers deeper scrutiny. Standard cases get 4-6 verification questions. Consulting cases? 8-15 probing questions about the client relationship.

Don't book the flight before you have the slot
H1B stamping in 2026 is the hardest it has been — no dropbox, no third-country option, social media checks, and no appointments at any Indian consulate until well into 2027. Talk to your employer's immigration counsel before booking anything. The people who end up stranded are the ones who flew first and went looking for an appointment after.
