Practice your H1B interview before Hyderabad
AI mock interview with real consular questions and instant feedback.
Why is Hyderabad the only option?
Since 2023, all first-time H/L visa interviews for Indian nationals happen exclusively at the Hyderabad consulate. Doesn't matter if you're from Mumbai, Delhi, or Kolkata — first stamp means Hyderabad. Renewals have more flexibility across all 5 Indian consulates.
The $297-340 million consulate complex on Nanakramguda in the Financial District opened in March 2023. It's the largest visa processing facility in South and Southeast Asia — 54 interview windows (up from ~15 in the old Paigah Palace building), capacity for 3,500 applicants daily, and it processed over 1 million visas in FY2023 alone.
US Consulate General Hyderabad
Address: Survey No. 115/1, Financial District, Nanakramguda, Hyderabad, Telangana 500032
Hours: Monday-Friday, 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM (closed US & Indian holidays)
Jurisdiction: Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha + all first-time H/L visas nationwide
Support: support-india@usvisascheduling.com | +91 20 69020000
Officers here see IT professionals all day. They know the patterns, the red flags, and they ask detailed questions. If you work for a consulting company, expect longer interviews — our mock interview data shows these sessions run noticeably longer than direct-hire cases because officers dig into the client relationship.
No More Dropbox for H1B
As of September 2, 2025, H1B is no longer eligible for interview waiver. Everyone — first-timers and renewals — must attend in-person. Age exceptions (under 14, over 79) also eliminated.
Third-Country Stamping Ended
Since September 6, 2025, Indian citizens can no longer stamp in Canada, Mexico, Dubai, or Singapore. All demand now funnels into 5 Indian consulates: Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata.
Social Media Must Be Public
Since December 15, 2025, officers check X/Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, and LinkedIn during interviews. Private profiles = instant 221(g). Make all profiles public at least 2 weeks before your appointment.
$100,000 Supplemental Fee for New Petitions
Since September 21, 2025, new H1B petitions where the beneficiary is outside the US face a $100,000 supplemental fee. Does NOT apply to renewals, extensions, transfers, or F-1→H-1B changes inside the US. The proclamation expires September 21, 2026.
What's the real wait time in 2026?
The State Department website shows ~75 days for H/L visas in Hyderabad. That number is dangerously misleading.
When you actually try to book, H1B appointment slots are not available at any Indian consulate until mid-2027. The gap between the official statistic and reality has been confirmed by multiple immigration law firms including Morgan Lewis, Reddy Neumann Brown, and Seyfarth Shaw.
| Consulate | Official Wait | Actual H1B Availability |
|---|---|---|
| Hyderabad | ~2.5 months | No slots until 2027 |
| Chennai | ~3 months | No slots until 2027 |
| Mumbai | ~1 month | No slots until 2027 |
| New Delhi | N/A | No slots until 2027 |
| Kolkata | N/A | No slots until 2027 |
Why the disconnect? The official wait time reflects historical averages, not current slot availability. The end of dropbox, the end of third-country stamping, and December 2025's mass appointment rescheduling (caused by social media vetting rollout) created a perfect storm. All Indian demand now funnels through just 5 consulates.
"Do Not Travel" Advisories from Major Employers
In December 2025, Apple and Google sent internal advisories to visa-holding employees recommending they not leave the United States for non-essential travel. Major law firms including Reddy Neumann Brown and Morgan Lewis issued similar guidance. Risk: getting stuck abroad for 12-18+ months waiting for a stamping appointment.
"H-1B visa holders who are out of the US on business or vacation will get stranded unless they get in before midnight September 21. H-1Bs still in India may have already missed the deadline as there is no way a direct flight from India will get in time."
What about the Domestic Visa Renewal pilot? The State Department ran a pilot (January-April 2024) processing ~20,000 H1B/L1 renewals inside the US. It's not been renewed and is considered unlikely under the current administration.
How do you book an appointment?
Three steps: fill DS-160, pay the $205 MRV fee, and book two appointments (biometrics + interview). Each step has gotchas that can cost you weeks.
Complete DS-160
Fill the DS-160 form at ceac.state.gov/genniv. Takes ~90 minutes. The session times out after 20 minutes of inactivity — save frequently. You can also run it through our DS-160 Checker to catch inconsistencies before submitting.
Critical for H1B: Enter your 13-digit USCIS petition number from I-797, employer details, and list all social media accounts from the past 5 years. Missing social media = red flag under the new vetting rules.
Pay MRV Fee ($205)
Pay through usvisascheduling.com (replaced USTravelDocs in July 2023).
NEFT/IMPS
Activates in ~3 hours
Cash at Citibank/Axis
Next business day
Fee is non-refundable and valid for 1 year. The $205 is for petition-based categories (H, L, O, P, Q, R).
Schedule Appointments
Once payment reflects (24-48 hours), book two appointments:
- VAC (biometrics): Schedule 1-3 days before interview
- Consular interview: Officially ~75 days wait, but real availability is mid-2027. Book the earliest slot available and monitor for cancellations.
Getting an Earlier Slot
- Book any available slot immediately — you get 1 free reschedule
- Cancellations appear most often: 6-8 AM IST, late night, Mondays
- Use slot monitoring services: checkvisaslots.com, visagrader.com
- Don't refresh too often — account gets locked for 24-72 hours
What documents do you need?
Two categories: standard visa documents and H1B-specific petition documents. Organize everything in a clear, transparent plastic folder — sealed envelopes are prohibited inside the consulate. Use our interactive H1B documents checklist to track your preparation.
Required Documents
- Valid passport (6+ months validity)
- All previous passports with US visas
- DS-160 confirmation with barcode
- Appointment confirmation letter
- MRV fee receipt ($205)
- 2 photos (51mm x 51mm, white background)
H1B Petition Documents
- Original I-797 Approval Notice
- Copy of Form I-129 petition
- Certified Labor Condition Application (LCA)
- Employment verification letter
- Pay stubs (3-6 months if applicable)
- W-2 forms, tax returns (2 years)
For Consulting/Staffing Companies (Critical)
- End-client letter on client letterhead with contact info
- Statement of Work (SOW) / Master Service Agreement
- Project description with technology stack
- End client location and contact details
What happens on interview day?
Plan for 2-4 hours total at the consulate. The interview itself takes 3-5 minutes for straightforward cases, but consulting company employees should budget 10-30 minutes. Officers are processing up to 3,500 applicants daily — they're efficient but thorough.
Arrive 1.5-2 hours early
Store your phone in paid lockers outside the consulate (₹50 for phone, ₹100 for bags). No electronics allowed inside — not even smartwatches.
Security screening (30-45 min)
Two checkpoints. Bag check, metal detector, document verification. Have your passport and appointment letter ready.
Wait inside (30-90 min)
Queue by your token number. Use this time to mentally review your key answers — salary, job title, work location, client details.
Biometrics collection
Fingerprints taken. Quick process, under 5 minutes.
Interview at window (3-30 min)
You stand at a window, not sit. Hand over documents when asked. Answer confidently and concisely. The officer has your petition, LCA, and DS-160 on screen — they're cross-checking your answers in real time. Decision is usually communicated immediately.
Exit with your slip
Blue slip = approved. Your passport is retained for stamping. Pick up your phone from the locker.
Strictly Prohibited Inside
What questions will officers ask?
The officer has your petition, LCA, and DS-160 on screen before you say a word. They're verifying that your verbal answers match the documents. Any inconsistency — a different salary number, a wrong city, a job title that doesn't match — triggers deeper scrutiny. Standard cases get 4-6 verification questions. Consulting cases? 8-15 probing questions about the client relationship.
Standard Questions (Everyone Gets These)
- • Who is your employer?
- • What is your job title and responsibilities?
- • What is your salary?
- • Which city/state will you work in?
- • What is your highest educational qualification?
- • How long have you worked with your current employer?
Consulting Company Questions (Expect Deep Probing)
- • Who is your end client?
- • Where is the client located? How big is the company?
- • Do you have a client letter?
- • Can you explain your project in detail?
- • What products does your company work on?
- • How many H1B employees does your company have?
- • Why do they need you in the US — can't you work from India?
H1B approvals for Indian IT consulting companies fell 70% from FY2015 levels. In FY2025, top-7 Indian IT firms got only 4,573 primary approvals — Amazon alone got 4,644.
Social Media Questions (New Since Dec 2025)
- • Can you show me your LinkedIn profile?
- • Does your LinkedIn match your current employment dates?
- • Why is your Instagram/Twitter set to private?
- • What do you post about on social media?

Practice these questions out loud
Reading answers isn't the same as speaking them under pressure. Mock interviews build the fluency you need at the window.
What happens after your interview?
You'll know the outcome immediately in most cases. Blue slip = approved. Colored slip = 221(g) administrative processing. Here's what each means and what to expect.
Approved (Blue Slip)
- • Passport retained for stamping
- • Delivered via Blue Dart (managed by CGI Federal)
- • Typically 3-7 business days
- • Premium delivery to your address: ₹500
- • Track at ceac.state.gov and usvisascheduling.com
- • Collect within 14 days (VAC) or 7 days (Blue Dart location)
221(g) Admin Processing
- • Not a denial — temporary hold
- • May need to submit additional docs
- • Wait time: 1 week to 12+ months
- • Submit additional docs as instructed by the officer
Hyderabad 221(g) Color Codes
Hyderabad uses color-coded 221(g) slips. The color tells you what type of processing you're in:
Green
Missing documents needed
Blue
Background/security checks
White
Internal review (most common)
Yellow
Fraud detection (rare)
Pink
Document verification hold
221(g) Processing Times by Type
Simple doc request
1-4 weeks
Employment verification
4-12 weeks
Security/background
3-6+ months
Referred to Washington
12+ months
Top 221(g) triggers at Hyderabad right now: private social media profiles (trigger #1 since December 2025), end-client verification for consulting employees, mismatches between LCA/I-129 and verbal answers, Technology Alert List referrals, and immigration history gaps. 221(g) rates have risen significantly since the social media vetting rollout — Hyderabad and Chennai started issuing them on December 15, 2025.
How can you practice before Hyderabad?
Reading answers is not the same as saying them at a consulate window with an officer staring at your documents. The gap between "I know what to say" and "I can say it confidently under pressure" — that's where most people get tripped up.
Permito's AI interviewer is modeled on Hyderabad-style interviews: rapid-fire verification questions, consulting deep-dives, social media probes. It asks follow-ups based on what you actually said, not from a static script.
Realistic voice practice
Speak your answers out loud to an AI that responds like a consular officer. You'll discover which answers sound confident and which fall flat.
Instant detailed feedback
After each session, get an assessment of your answers — clarity, consistency with documents, confidence level, and specific areas to improve.
Consulting-specific scenarios
If you work for a staffing company, the AI will probe your client relationship the way Hyderabad officers do — client name, location, project details, reporting structure.
For a broader preparation strategy covering all visa types, see our US Visa Interview Preparation Guide.
Tips from recent Hyderabad applicants
These come from people who went through Hyderabad in late 2025 and early 2026:
Make social media public 2+ weeks before — officers check during the interview. Private = 221(g). Ensure LinkedIn matches DS-160 exactly: job titles, dates, company names.
Know your salary, title, and work location cold — verified against your LCA on the spot. Hesitation looks suspicious.
Consulting employees: know your client inside out — company name, location, project, manager's name at client site, what the client company does.
Book a hotel in Nanakramguda/Gachibowli — walking distance reduces morning stress. Options: Casa Hotel & Suites (0.2 km), Yellow Sapphire Hotel, Manasarovar The Fern (~1 km), Sheraton Hyderabad (luxury), Lemon Tree Gachibowli (budget).
Dress business casual, stay calm — formal pants, collared shirt, neutral colors. Answer exactly what's asked. No extra information volunteered.

Frequently Asked Questions
The Bottom Line
H1B stamping in 2026 is the toughest it's been — no dropbox, no third-country options, social media checks, and real slots backed up to 2027. Talk to your employer's immigration counsel before booking travel. If you do go, start 3-4 months early.
The fundamentals still work: know your petition cold, organize your documents, make socials public, and practice answering out loud until it's automatic. For the full strategy, see our Interview Preparation Guide. Bringing your spouse? Check the H4 Interview Questions Guide.
