H4 approval rate: 97%. If your spouse has a valid H1B, you're almost certainly getting this visa.
The 3% who fail almost always made the same preventable mistakes — not knowing their spouse's job details, fumbling marriage questions, or contradicting their DS-160. And since December 2025, there's one new thing to watch: mandatory social media screening.
If your spouse is also going through the H1B interview, coordinate your preparation. Officers compare answers.
Practice H4 interview questions before the real thing
AI mock interview with marriage, employment, and follow-up questions.
H4 in 30 seconds: Dependent visa for H1B spouses and children under 21. Can't work unless you have an H4 EAD (requires spouse's approved I-140 or H1B beyond 6 years). India received 108,930 H4 visas in FY 2024 — 78% of all H4 worldwide. H4 EAD program is legally settled (Supreme Court, October 2025), but automatic EAD extensions ended October 30, 2025.
The 5 Mistakes Behind Almost Every H4 Denial
With a 97% approval rate, you almost have to try to get denied. And yet:
Not knowing spouse's work details
The #1 red flag. If you can't name your spouse's company, job title, salary, or what they actually do — the officer questions whether the relationship is genuine. Sit down with your spouse and rehearse these details until they're automatic.
Inconsistencies in marriage details
Your marriage date, location, ceremony details must match what your spouse said in their interview and what's on your DS-160. Real case: a wife gave inconsistent answers about an Arya Samaj marriage due to nervousness — resulted in a permanent fraud finding under 212(a)(6)(C)(i).
Signaling intent to work (without H4 EAD)
Mentioning job searching, career plans, or "I have skills in IT" when you don't have an EAD signals potential unauthorized employment. The officer must ensure you understand the H4 visa's limitations.
DS-160 inconsistencies
The officer has your DS-160 on their screen. Every answer you give must match what you submitted. Use our DS-160 checker to catch discrepancies before you submit.
Applying before completing full wedding ceremony
Applying after only a ring ceremony or registration but before the full wedding is a serious red flag. US consulates consider partial ceremonies as potential fraud. H4 visas have been stamped and then explicitly revoked within 30 days when fraud was suspected.
Marriage Red Flags Officers Watch For
- Marriage right after H1B approval
- Court/registered marriage only (no ceremony)
- Very short courtship before marriage
- Significant age gap (15-20+ years)
- No joint bank accounts or shared assets
- Social media inconsistencies (new 2026)
2026 Social Media Screening: The Biggest Change No One Talks About
On December 15, 2025, the US Department of State expanded social media vetting to all H1B and H4 visa applicants. This is not optional. Every H4 applicant must now make social media profiles public before their interview. Most H4 guides haven't caught up to this yet — and applicants who ignore it are getting hit with 221(g) administrative processing slips.
Important: December 2025 appointments were rescheduled
Many December 2025 appointments were cancelled and rescheduled to March-October 2026. Early applicants on December 15 received 221(g) slips for social media review. Expect delays during the implementation period.

What Officers Check
The DS-160 lists approximately 20 platforms. Officers conduct an "online presence review" looking for:
Consistency
LinkedIn must match petition details exactly — employer name, job title, dates
Credibility
Biographical details must match DS-160 information
Immigration violations
Posts suggesting unauthorized work or intent to violate visa terms
Security concerns
Hostility toward US citizens, institutions, or extremist content
How to Prepare Your Social Media
Do
- Make ALL profiles public when submitting DS-160
- Ensure LinkedIn matches visa petition details exactly
- Review all posts, comments, shares, and follows
- Update outdated or incorrect information
Don't
- Delete accounts or mass-delete content before interview
- Create fake accounts or use pseudonyms
- Select "None" if you had accounts in the past 5 years
- Keep profiles private — "evasiveness" raises suspicion
According to a May 2025 State Department cable, "lack of any online presence" or keeping accounts private "may be reflective of evasiveness and call into question the applicant's credibility." Don't give them reasons to doubt you.
The 6 Questions That Come Up Every Time
These six show up in nearly every H4 interview. Nail these and the rest is details.
"Where is your spouse working?"
"My husband works at Microsoft as a Senior Software Engineer in their Azure Cloud division. He's been there since March 2024, and he's based at their Redmond, Washington office."
Why they ask: Officers verify that the H1B employment is legitimate and active. Know the company name, your spouse's exact title, which team or project, and the office location. Vague answers like "he works in IT" trigger deeper probing.
"When did you get married?"
"We got married on November 12, 2024. It was a traditional Hindu ceremony in Hyderabad with about 300 guests. I have our wedding album and marriage certificate here."
Why they ask: This is the starting point for marriage legitimacy verification. Know the exact date, location, type of ceremony, and approximate guest count. Recently married couples receive the most scrutiny — especially if the marriage happened after the H1B was approved.
"Was it a love marriage or arranged marriage?"
"It was an arranged marriage. Our families connected through a common family friend in 2023. We met in June, talked for about 6 months, and got engaged in January 2024."
Why they ask: Officers understand both love and arranged marriages. What matters is a consistent, detailed narrative. If arranged: who arranged it, how you met, how long the courtship was. If love: how you met, how long you've been together. Be natural, not defensive.
"What does your spouse do at work?"
"He works on designing cloud infrastructure solutions for enterprise clients. His team builds and manages scalable data storage systems. He mainly works with Azure services and leads a small team of 4 engineers."
High scrutiny: This is where many H4 applicants fail. You MUST know your spouse's specific job duties — not just "software engineer." Ask your spouse to explain their daily work in simple terms. If your spouse works for a consulting company, also know the end client name and project.
"What will you do in the United States?"
"I'll be living with my husband in Redmond. I plan to take care of our home and settle into the community. I'm also interested in taking some online courses to continue developing my skills, though my main focus will be supporting our family there."
Warning: Do NOT mention plans to work unless you already hold an approved H4 EAD card. Saying "I'll look for a job" signals intent to violate visa terms. The H4 visa assumes financial dependency on the H1B spouse.
"Can you show me your wedding photos?"
"Of course, here's our wedding album. This is from the main ceremony — you can see both families. And this is from the reception afterwards."
Why they ask: Physical evidence of a real ceremony. Bring a proper wedding album (not just phone photos) showing both families, the ceremony itself ("7 phere" for Hindu marriages), and guests. Court-marriage-only couples face extra scrutiny — officers have asked: "Why court marriage? Don't you follow the same religion?"
A note on these answers: They're templates, not scripts. Officers spot memorized paragraphs instantly. Know the facts — company name, salary, wedding date, office location — but say them the way you'd tell a friend, not read them off a card.
Full Question Bank by Category
Use this as reference, not a memorization list. Marriage and spouse employment get the most airtime — that's where officers dig deepest.
"How did you meet your spouse?"
Give a clear, detailed story. Through family, mutual friends, work, college — be specific about when and where. Inconsistencies between your answer and your spouse's previous interview answers are red flags.
"How long have you known each other?"
Officers compare this with the marriage date to gauge whether the relationship is genuine. Very short courtship periods (especially with H1B timing) draw scrutiny.
"How many people attended your wedding?"
A genuine Indian wedding typically has 100+ guests. Unusually small numbers or "just a registration" raises concerns. Have photos ready.
"Where did you go for your honeymoon?"
A simple factual answer works. If you didn't take a honeymoon, that's fine — say so with a reason ("we planned to travel together once I join him in the US").
"Who arranged the marriage?"
For arranged marriages: name the family members or matchmaker involved. Officers understand the concept — just be clear and consistent.
"Show me your marriage certificate."
Have the original readily accessible. The date, names, and details must match your DS-160. If the certificate has name differences (maiden name vs married name), be ready to explain.
"Do you have WhatsApp chats or call logs with your spouse?"
Recently married couples
This is increasingly common for couples who married recently or had court marriages. Having 3+ months of chat/call history readily available strengthens your case significantly.
"Why did you get married right after the H1B was approved?"
Trap question
The officer suspects a marriage of convenience. Explain the real timeline — engagement before H1B, families planning the wedding, etc. Never get defensive. Present it as coincidental timing supported by evidence.
"What is your spouse's salary?"
Know the annual salary figure. It should match the LCA (Labor Condition Application) on file. If your spouse recently got a raise, know both the current and previous amount.
"What company does your spouse work for?"
Full legal company name, not abbreviations. If a consulting company, also know the end client. "He works for TCS, currently on a project at Bank of America in Charlotte."
"What is their job title and project?"
The exact title on the H1B petition. Describe the project in 1-2 sentences. Officers verify this against the I-797 approval notice.
"Where is the office located?"
City and state at minimum. If consulting, both the employer's office and the client site location.
"How long has your spouse been in the US?"
Know when they first entered, on what visa, and their current status. "He went to the US in 2019 for his MS at University of Illinois, then got his H1B in 2022."
"When did your spouse get the H1B approved?"
Month and year. Know whether it's an initial H1B, extension, or transfer. The I-797 approval date should be at your fingertips.
"Which university did your spouse attend?"
University name, degree, major, and graduation year. This is especially relevant if your spouse transitioned from F1 to H1B.
"Are you planning to work there?"
Critical
Answer "No" unless you already have an approved H4 EAD card in hand. The H4 visa presumes financial dependency. Even if you plan to apply for EAD later, don't mention it — focus on joining your spouse.
"Will you be a homemaker?"
Not a trick question. A straightforward "Yes, I'll be managing our household and settling into our new community" is perfectly fine. You can mention hobbies, community activities, or continuing education.
"Do you plan to study?"
H4 holders can study in the US. If you have genuine plans, mention them. "I'm interested in taking some courses at a community college" is fine. Just don't make it sound like the primary purpose — that would require an F1.
"Where will you be living?"
Know the city, state, and ideally the neighborhood. Having a lease agreement or your spouse's current address ready helps.
"Who will take care of your finances?"
"My spouse will be our primary earner." Have spouse's pay stubs and bank statements ready to demonstrate financial capability.
"Has your spouse applied for a green card?"
Answer honestly. H4 is a dual-intent visa — applying for a green card is perfectly legal. "Yes, his employer has filed an I-140 petition" is fine. Do NOT lie — officers have access to immigration records.
"Do you plan to settle permanently in the US?"
Unlike F1, H4 allows dual intent. A balanced answer works: "Our immediate plans depend on my husband's work. We'll see how things develop, but we also have strong family ties in India."
"Why can't you visit on a B2 visa instead?"
"I want to live with my husband full-time, not just visit. A B2 is for temporary visits, but we want to build our life together while he's working there."
"What if your spouse loses their job?"
"He's well-established in his field with strong job prospects. But if that happened, we'd evaluate our options — he could find another H1B sponsor, or we'd return to India where we have family and opportunities."
"Why were you rejected for a visa previously?"
If applicable, be honest and brief. Explain what changed since then. Never hide previous denials — officers see your full history. If you were previously denied under 214(b), explain how your circumstances are now different.
"Why are you applying now when you got married earlier?"
Have a logical timeline: "We got married in 2024, but my husband's H1B petition was still being processed. Now that his visa is approved and he's settled, it's the right time for me to join him."

Consulate-Specific Tips for India
H4 interview experience varies by consulate. Here's what to expect at each location based on recent applicant reports. For detailed logistics on any consulate, see our Mumbai vs Delhi consulate guide.
| Consulate | Typical Duration | Key Characteristics |
|---|---|---|
| Hyderabad | 3-10 min | Generally straightforward; Telugu-speaking officers available |
| Chennai | Under 5 min | Direct questioning; fastest processing (~28 days for appointments) |
| Delhi | 5-15 min | Frequent marriage legitimacy questions; longer wait times |
| Mumbai | 5-10 min | Straightforward; marriage-related questions common |
| Kolkata | Variable | Less commonly used; straightforward questions |
Note that your spouse's H1B stamping must now happen in Hyderabad for all first-time applicants. If you're both interviewing during the same India trip, coordinate your appointment locations carefully.

Can you name your spouse's salary, job title, and team right now?
If you hesitated — practice with an AI consular officer before the real thing.
How to Practice for Your H4 Interview
H4 looks easy on paper. That's the trap — people skip prep, freeze when asked what their spouse does at work, and a "routine" interview turns into a 221(g) hold.
Think about it: you're answering questions about someone else's life. Your spouse's salary, job title, team, daily work. If you can't rattle those off without pausing, you're not ready.
What a practice session looks like
AI asks "What does your spouse do?" You say "He's a software engineer." It fires back: "What exactly does he work on? Which team? What's his salary?" — and in 30 seconds you know whether you're actually ready or not.
Tests your knowledge of spouse's details
The AI asks follow-up questions about your spouse's company, role, and salary — catching gaps before a real officer does.
Probes marriage legitimacy like a real officer
Challenges your answers about how you met, wedding details, and relationship timeline — the exact areas where H4 applicants trip up.
Catches inconsistencies before they cost you
Identifies contradictions between your answers — the same thing a consular officer would notice but with no real consequences.
Voice-based, just like the real thing
Speaking answers aloud is completely different from reading them. The AI responds in real-time, creating realistic pressure that builds your confidence.
Pro tip: Do at least 3 practice sessions. The first will feel awkward. By the third, answering questions about your spouse's job and your marriage details will feel automatic — which is exactly how it should sound at the consulate window.
