The H1B visa interview is nothing like it used to be. If you're preparing based on 2023 or 2024 advice, you're already behind.
2026 brought three massive changes: dropbox is gone for all H1B applicants, social media vetting is mandatory, and a new $100,000 fee applies to certain petitions. Meanwhile, H1B denial rates sit at historic lows — just 2.2% — meaning those who prepare properly almost always succeed. If you're new to visa interviews, start with our complete US visa interview preparation guide for the fundamentals.

What's Changed in 2026
If you went through H1B stamping before 2025, the rules have changed. Significantly. Three things you need to know:
Dropbox / Interview Waiver — ELIMINATED
As of September 2, 2025, H1B is no longer eligible for interview waiver. Every H1B applicant — including renewals and stamping — must attend an in-person interview. Plan your India trip accordingly.

Social Media Must Be PUBLIC
Since December 15, 2025, consular officers check your social media during the interview. Private profiles trigger 221(g) administrative processing. Make Twitter/X, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and YouTube public before your appointment.
First reports from Chennai show officers asking twice to confirm profiles are public.
$100,000 Fee for New Petitions
Applies to NEW H1B petitions filed after September 21, 2025 for beneficiaries outside the US without existing H1B status. Does NOT apply to: extensions, amendments, transfers with already-approved petitions, or F-1 students changing status within the US.
Here's the thing though — despite all these changes, H1B approval rates are still at historic highs. Only 2.2% denial rate in FY2025, down from 24% at the peak in FY2018. If your employer filed correctly and you prepare well, the odds are heavily in your favor.
When You Need an H1B Interview
Not everyone with an approved H1B petition needs a consular interview. Here's who does — and where:
| Situation | Interview Required? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| First-time H1B (never had stamp) | YES | Hyderabad only for Indians |
| H1B renewal/extension (had previous stamp) | YES | Since Sep 2025 — no more dropbox |
| H1B transfer (new employer) | YES | Even if previous stamp is valid |
| Working in US, not traveling abroad | NO | I-797 approval is sufficient within US |
| F-1 to H1B change of status (in US) | NO | Interview only if you leave US |
First-Time H1B = Hyderabad Only
Since 2023, all first-time H1B visa interviews for Indian nationals are processed exclusively at the Hyderabad consulate. It doesn't matter if you're from Mumbai, Delhi, or Chennai — your first H1B stamp happens in Hyderabad. Subsequent renewals can be done at any consulate.
20+ H1B Interview Questions & Sample Answers

About Your Job & Employer
"What does your company do?"
Know your employer's business in 1-2 sentences. Include: industry, main products/services, approximate size.
Sample Answer
"We're a financial technology company that provides payment processing software to banks. We have about 2,000 employees globally, headquartered in San Francisco."
"What is your job title and what do you do?"
State your exact title from the petition. Describe daily work in plain English — avoid jargon.
Sample Answer
"I'm a Software Engineer. I build and maintain the systems that process credit card transactions. I write code, fix bugs, and work with my team to add new features."
Avoid: "I implement microservices architectures using Kubernetes and design CI/CD pipelines." Officers aren't technical — speak simply.
"What is your salary?"
State the exact annual figure from your LCA. This is verified against their records.
Sample Answer
"$145,000 per year."
"Where is your office located?"
Give the exact address from your petition. If remote, explain work arrangement clearly.
"Who is your supervisor?"
Know your manager's name, title, and how long you've worked with them.
"How many people work at your company?"
Approximate number is fine. Know both your office size and company-wide headcount.
"How did you find this job?"
Be honest and specific — through a recruiter, referral, campus placement, LinkedIn, etc.
About Your Qualifications
"What is your educational background?"
State your highest degree, field, university, and graduation year.
Sample Answer
"I have a Master's degree in Computer Science from University of Southern California, completed in 2022. Before that, I got my Bachelor's in IT from Mumbai University in 2019."
"How does your education relate to this job?"
Connect specific coursework or skills to your current role. This validates the "specialty occupation" requirement.
"What was your previous job?"
Briefly describe previous employment and how it led to your current position.
"Do you have any professional certifications?"
List relevant certifications that strengthen your specialty occupation case.
"What technologies do you work with?"
List main tools/languages, but keep it simple. Don't overwhelm with technical terms.
About Your Plans & Intent
"What are your plans after H1B expires?"
This probes immigration intent. Focus on the temporary nature of your stay and professional growth.
Sample Answer
"I plan to continue working and gaining experience in my field. My focus right now is on doing excellent work for my employer and developing my skills. I'll evaluate my options as my visa period comes to an end."
"Do you plan to apply for a green card?"
H1B is a "dual intent" visa — unlike F-1, you can legally intend to immigrate. Be honest but measured.
Sample Answer
"My employer has mentioned they may sponsor me for a green card in the future, but that's not my immediate focus. Right now I'm focused on contributing to my team and doing excellent work."
"Do you have family in the US?"
Be honest. Mention spouse on H4, siblings, cousins. Concealment is detected and damages credibility.
"Have you ever been denied a visa?"
If yes, explain briefly and state what has changed. Don't be defensive.
"Have you ever overstayed in the US?"
Officers have your entire travel history. Honesty is critical — even minor overstays are on record.
Difficult Questions (Especially for Consulting)
If you work for a consulting company or are placed at client sites, expect deeper scrutiny. Hyderabad is known for 10-30 minute interviews in these cases.
"Why can't an American do this job?"
Focus on your specific qualifications — not American workers' shortcomings.
Sample Answer
"My employer went through the required labor certification process. I was hired because of my specialized skills in [specific technology] and my advanced degree in this field. I bring specific expertise that matches what the role requires."
"Who is your end client?"
Know the client company name, what they do, your project details, and have a client letter ready.
"Is this an in-house project or client engagement?"
Be honest. If client-based, explain the relationship clearly and have documentation.
"Did you pay for this visa or job?"
The answer must be NO. Employers are legally required to pay all H1B filing fees. If you paid anything, that's a violation.
"What if your H1B is denied?"
Stay calm. Mention you'll explore options with your employer or return home to continue your career there.
The Golden Rule
Your verbal answers must EXACTLY match your petition. Officers have your I-129, LCA, and DS-160 on screen. Any inconsistency — even minor — triggers concern. Before your interview, memorize: your salary, job title, work address, start date, supervisor's name, and company size.

H1B Interview in Hyderabad: What to Expect
Hyderabad has a reputation — and it's earned. This is the strictest US consulate for H1B interviews, especially if you work for a consulting company. Expect thorough questioning.
Logistics
- • Location: Paigah Palace, 1-8-323, Chiran Fort Lane, Begumpet
- • Lockers: Available nearby for ₹100/hour — leave your phone there
- • Arrive: 1.5 hours before appointment time
- • Total time: Expect 2-4 hours inside the consulate
For hotels, transport, and step-by-step process, see our complete Hyderabad H1B stamping guide.
Why Hyderabad is Strict
Hyderabad handles ALL first-time H1B interviews for Indians, creating a concentration of complex cases — especially consulting company employees with client placements. Officers here are experienced at probing these relationships. Come prepared with detailed client documentation.
What Happens Inside
- Security screening and bag check
- Biometric collection (fingerprints)
- Wait in queue until your number is called
- Document check at first window
- Interview at second window (standing, not sitting)
- Decision communicated immediately in most cases
If You Receive 221(g)
221(g) is not a denial — it's administrative processing. You may be asked to submit additional documents or wait for verification. Common reasons: private social media profiles, difficulty verifying client relationships, or security checks for certain technologies (AI, biotech, cybersecurity).
Common Mistakes to Avoid
People keep making the same mistakes. Don't be one of them:
Not knowing your petition details
Your salary, job title, work location, and start date should be memorized. Fumbling for these basic facts signals you don't know your own case — or worse, that it's fraudulent.
Fix: Read your petition thoroughly. Quiz yourself on key details.
Contradicting your DS-160 or documents
Officers see your DS-160 on screen. Saying something different than what you wrote triggers immediate suspicion.
Fix: Review your DS-160 before the interview. Ensure every answer matches.
Using technical jargon
"I implement microservices architectures using Kubernetes" means nothing to a non-technical officer. They might think you're hiding something behind jargon.
Fix: Explain your job like you would to a family member. Simple, clear language.
Private social media profiles
Since December 2025, officers check social media during the interview. Private profiles = 221(g) slip.
Fix: Make ALL profiles public at least 2 weeks before your interview.
Not having client documentation (consulting)
If you work at a client site, officers will ask about the relationship. "I don't know the client's details" is a red flag.
Fix: Get a client letter on their letterhead with project details and contact information.
Rehearsed, robotic answers
Officers can tell when you're reciting memorized scripts. It makes you seem coached or dishonest.
Fix: Practice enough that answers feel natural, not memorized. Mock interviews help build this fluency.
Frequently Asked Questions
Conclusion
Look, the H1B interview has gotten harder — no dropbox, social media checks, tougher questions in Hyderabad. But 97.8% approval means the system isn't designed to fail you. It's designed to verify you.
Your job is simple: be consistent. Your verbal answers match your petition. Your DS-160 matches your petition. Your LinkedIn matches your petition. No contradictions.
Practice until answering feels automatic. Know your salary, title, and job duties cold. When you walk into that consulate, you should feel like you've already done this ten times. Because, ideally, you have.
